Getting around in the Izu Islands

The easiest way to get around on the main island (Oshima Island) is by car, but most major sights and attractions are accessible by bus. Though, travelers will have to rely on single tickets or a prepaid card, since no special train or bus passes are provided within this area. If you decide to rent a car, it is advised to do so from the nearest airport in the vicinity. You can use our car rental widget in the FAQ menu below. 


It's also important to note that the Izu Islands consists of multiple smaller islands. To get around them, it is advised to take the following ferries:

Getting to the Izu Islands

Public transportation:

Most travelers will arrive at Motomachi Port, as Oshima is the biggest island of the chain and has the most facilities for tourists. From there, travelers have access to the island's bus network. Be advised that buses run infrequent in this area. The nearest and most convenient airport is Haneda Airport in Tokyo. 

  • by car: approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes (including time on the ferry) 

  • by public transport: approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes (including time on the ferry)

The swimming season on the Izu islands is usually between July and August. 
 

Festivals on the Izu Islands

There are two famous festivals in this area. Please be advised that the following info is based upon previous entries of the festival and that the dates might have changed for the following year. It is also possible that the entire festival is cancelled in the case of heavy rainfall or a natural disaster. Please check with the official organisers' website for the most up-to-date information.
