Autumn Leaves in Aomori

Settled in the northern tip of the main island of Honshu, the less travelled prefecture of Aomori has many hidden gems. Recognized for its natural beauty, Aomori has many stunning locations to hunt and see the autumn foliage, or better known as ‘momijigari’ in Japanese. With it being located in the north, the much anticipated changing of the leaves into the fiery blaze of autumn colors, occurs much sooner. This means that you can witness the colorful leaves here first, and also see them in other places like Tokyo, allowing for you to see the spectacle in multiple locations across the country. Here are a few spots in Aomori where the autumn hues are on display for all its glory.

 

Tsutanuma Lake

Found in the city of Towada, this spectacular lake offers picturesque sights of a lush forest engulfed in an inferno of colors. With incredible views all throughout the year, it really shines as a standout spot during autumn. As the clear calm water of the lake beautifully reflects the pigments of the leaves, it leaves you feeling as if you stepped foot into a dream- like mirrored world. Multiple walking trails are also present around the lake, so you can really soak in the beauty of nature while you are visiting here.

 

Lake Towada

Another lake like the previous, but on a much grander scale. As the name suggests, located once again in Towada, from here you can set your eyes on views of a mountain consumed by the autumn foliage. Surrounded by a vast lake and a beautifully formed coastline accentuated by the towering mountain and bright forest colors, it gives hints of the charming lakes in Italy that are renown across the globe. You can experience the sights close up by taking a stroll across the shore, which then leads onto an observation deck for panoramic views of the outstretching lake. On the other hand, maybe you prefer seeing as much of the gorgeous nature in a single frame possible, by riding on a cruise that offers these sights from afar. The quiet secluded environment of this area does a really good job of making things relaxing, and even gives off a sense of a fantastical aura in the air.
