Getting around in the Lake Biwa Area

The easiest way to get around in the Lake Biwa Area is by car, but most major sights and attractions are accessible by a combination of trains and busses. If you decide to rent a car, it is advised to do so from the nearest airport in the vicinity. Getting to Lake Biwa

Public transportation:

To get from Kyoto to the Lake Biwa Area by public transportation, travelers need to:

  1. First, take the JR Biwako Line Rapid Service from Kyoto Station to Otsu Station. The journey takes approximately 9 minutes.

  2. Transfer to the Keihan Ishiyama Sakamoto Line at Ishiyama Station and get off at Sakamoto Hieizanguchi Station. The journey takes approximately 15 minutes. The total travel time is approximately 24 minutes.
     

*Attention: since the lake area is quite vast and has multiple areas of interest, there is not one specific place to get off. Luckily, the area is almost completely surrounded by railways, so travelers can get off at any point of interest.

The nearest and most convenient airport is Kansai International Airport in Osaka. 

  • by car: approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes

  • by public transport: approximately 3 hours

  • by bullet-train: approximately 2 hours (only to Maibara station)

Seasonal information

Cherry blossoms: 

The best time to see cherry blossoms in Japan is usually between late March and early April. Although the blooming period can vary slightly from year to year. 

 

Beaches:

The swimming season on mainland Japan is usually between July and August. 

 

Winter sports:

Ski resorts in Japan typically run from January until April. Though this can differ from year to year, depending on the amount of snow.
